A Very Crappy Situation
When you gotta pump, but you are running late for church…
Have you ever been standing in a single-stall bathroom, no shirt on, holding a baby who is absolutely covered in poop? No? Well, let me paint the picture for you — it’s an experience. A humbling, character-building, what is my life right now kind of experience. Somewhere between “you are in a good mood” and “why am I wet,” everything went sideways.
There I was, waiting for my people to arrive for dinner before church and realized that while Cassy was having a grand time my shirt had officially become a casualty of war. And of course my parents made a perfect entry a that moment. So off to the tiny cubicle of a bathroom. My mom is casually rinsing poop out of my shirt in a restaurant sink like this is just another Wednesday (because honestly, at this point… it kind of is), and I’m doing a full wardrobe change on a wiggly baby in a space the size of a closet, questioning every life choice that led me here.
It was messy.
It was slightly horrifying.
And yet… weirdly normal.
Let’s just say we learned our lesson. Everyone in this household now has a full backup outfit in both vehicles. Not optional. Not negotiable. Because parenting has a funny way of humbling you the second you feel even remotely prepared. But here’s the thing — as ridiculous and, honestly, crappy as that situation was, I found myself laughing about it. Because in the grand scheme of things, this is the life I prayed for. The unpredictable and sometimes shirtless-in-a-public-bathroom kind of life.
It’s not glamorous. It’s not put together. But it’s full. And in that moment — standing there in the chaos of it all — I realized I had never been happier.
My house may currently look like a page out of an I-Spy book. My dinner more often than not may be what ever I can microwave in the quickest amount of time. And ya’ll…I love it. A really fitting verse for this is:
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” James 1:2-3
Nothing like Duck and Paco time at church!
